FACT: The use of DDT is prohibited here in the U.S. but we still make it. What do we do with it? We sell it to South America farmers. Then we ship in their produce to stock our shelves. Sickening, eh? So then, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
Join the Eat Local Challenge! For the month of May, eat as local as you can… local produce, honey, fish, dairy, whatever. Much easier for some areas than others, but should be a fun challenge! So my exemptions will be legumes, grains, pasta, coffee, and goat cheese…. although I’m sure I can find some local goat cheese with a little extra brain power. And I’m going to try to avoid Trader Joe’s and shop at my local natural foods market and natural foods Coop. A reminder to SLO locals: local spices should not be a problem as The Spice Hunter is right in our backyard! Also, for local vegetarians, Wildwood soy and tofu is just 100 miles away in Watsonville. And there’s at least 8 local farmer’s markets that I know of here in SLO county alone. If I make any more local discoveries, I’ll be sure to post them.
Supporting small, local farms, eating fresher foods, keeping your money in your community, avoiding Big Agribusiness, and saving fossil fuels! It’s a win-win-win-win-win situation!
